Dr Ma is interested in volcanology and petrology of volcanic rocks.

He is also an experienced field geologist, having conducted fieldwork in a number of locations and countries, including Hong Kong, China, Cambodia, Syria and Cyprus.

He was involved in research projects studying the origins of Hong Kong granites and their associated mafic rocks.
